Our ambition: No. 1 in energy recovery and efficiency

We talked with Compressor Technique Business Area President Vagner Rego about our potential to reduce our customers’ carbon impact and the benefits this focus brings to our organization.

Vagner, how much is CO2 emissions reduction a part of your strategy today?

Energy efficiency has been part of our product development for many years and is a major competitive advantage. Nowadays it’s basically impossible to have sustainable growth without best-in-class products when it comes to energy efficiency. It’s crucial to have it in our strategy.

CO2 reduction is not only about energy efficiency, however, it’s about the total impact the product has on the environment. Reducing materials, eliminating packaging waste, using recyclable materials, optimizing transport efficiency and many more actions are now taken into consideration during the design of new products.

Since Atlas Copco has focused on energy efficiency for decades, how much more potential is there for technological improvements in this regard?

Our focus has shifted to not only delivering the most energy efficient compressor, but to helping our customers operate the most efficient compressor room. Our challenge now is to further stretch the boundaries of technology to continue delivering the highest performance in terms of energy efficiency.

To achieve efficiency in all aspects we have developed central controllers with advanced algorithms ensuring that all compressors are used in the most optimal situation depending on the customer’s needs at any given point of time. And our SMARTLINK connectivity platform provides our customers insights on the performance of their installation and makes recommendations to improve its energy efficiency and CO2 reduction.

Breakthrough innovation in air treatment and gas generation reduces the cost of quality compressed air and gases and significantly reduces CO2. Our Cerades desiccant is a nice example of such a breakthrough innovation. When air is compressed, heat is produced. Our energy recovery solutions recover more than 90% of this heat, which can be re-used in the customer’s production process as hot air, water or steam. 

Are CO2 savings a big part of the sales argument today, or is it all about reducing the customer’s energy consumption and thereby, costs?

Total cost of ownership is the biggest sales argument. Customers look beyond the initial investment cost and understand the impact the product has over its complete life cycle and the environment. Our customers have targets to reduce CO2 emissions and make investments to upgrade their installations with modern and more efficient technologies. This gives us a competitive advantage. 

Is there more we can do to improve our customers’ energy efficiency and lower their carbon impact?

Focusing on the complete compressed air installation at the point of use is crucial. The most energy-efficient products need to be 100% aligned to the required air needs of our customers at any give point of time.

Our central controllers in combination with our connectivity solution guarantee the best performance at the lowest cost, and uur Energy Recovery solution ensures that waste energy, in the form of heat, can be re-used in the customer’s production process. Our ambition is to create a carbon-neutral compressor room.

What are you doing to limit our own carbon impact?

We’re taking several initiatives to reduce our carbon impact in our operations: sourcing green energy, solar panels, low energy lights, and reducing waste and water consumption are just a few of them.

Sustainability is something we breathe through our complete process, from the moment we design a new product through the production and sourcing process and ultimately in the delivery and operation of our products at our customers’ sites.

We did a calculation of the amount of CO2 emissions that could be avoided annually if all potential customer applications were to switch to one of our most energy-saving products. Learn more about the potential impact here.
