"Slow down, have patience and I believe you'll do just fine"

Cordell Wells joined us as a Field Service Engineer in 2018. He appreciates that the Group shares his genuine commitment to a job well done, as well as the work-life balance he has been able to achieve. Cordell even compares his current team to his best unit in the army.

As a Field Service Engineer, Cordell goes between customer sites to make sure the equipment from the Group is working optimally.

“We get to meet a lot of customers, get to meet a lot of people and I am a people person, so I like human to human contact,” he says.

Another one of the things Cordell likes best about his job is seeing the impact from his efforts.

“When you go in and the unit has broken down. You figure out what's going on with it, fix it and you leave. When you come back because it's time to do the service and you ask how everything's working. And they say “ever since you touched it, everything is good.” That's a good thing to hear,” Cordell says.

Work-life balance for more family time

Cordell first found out about the Group through a friend who was already working with us. The friend shared a positive experience and Cordell’s interest was peaked. When he speaks about the Group, it becomes clear that Cordell is thriving.

“I love this company. And I try my best to let everybody know so they can experience it as well. I'm talking about people that's not with the company,” Cordell says.

One thing Cordell highlights is the work-life balance that working with service for Atlas Copco Group offers him.

“I'm able to do family time with my kids. I have seven, but four here. And I'm involved with them. I'm involved with the school. I'm involved in the things they do. I'm able to be home to be with them, help out my wife.”

  • Current position: Field Service Engineer
  • How to develop relationships with customers: Having a genuine understanding that when the compressor is not working, their business is down. Focus on the customer you are with, even if you have places to go.
  • Collaborating in problem-solving: Sometimes you can solve things yourself, sometimes it is better to pick up the phone. Whether it is about driving directions or a wiring issue.

Quick facts about
Cordell

Trusted to solve problems – with support available

As is common for service professionals, Cordell usually does not see his team in person. However, they are only a phone call away and Cordell feels supported by colleagues and management – seeing our culture of trust and accountability in his day-to-day.

“I do my best to uphold that trust. We are by ourselves. Our manager isn't following us around. He is not overseeing us like that,” Cordell says.

“You have the backing of the manager and the company. You're the tech on the site. So if you see something that they don’t see, most likely they're gonna go with your recommendation.”

On the topic of problem-solving through curiosity, Cordell brings up collaboration. He tells the story of a time when he ended up calling a more senior colleague, who was more used to a particular machine than he was and they solved a wiring issue together.

“Once we solved the problem I told him thanks. And he said “you would have figured it out.” And I said “yeah, I probably would have by midnight.” He saved me eight hours. We really highly encourage one another that if we need help, we reach out.”

Cordell sums up how happy he is with his managers and colleagues with a comparison from his time in the armed forces.

I would say that I can compare the leadership and camaraderie here to that of my best unit in the military.

Advice for newcomers

As far as advice to service professionals that are about to start working for the Group, Cordell’s advice is not to rush things. He highlights that in his experience new employees are allowed a good amount of time to learn, that there is no need to deliver at 100% straight away.

“It's very generous time, so take your time, have patience. And I believe you'll do just fine,” Cordell says.
