Water for All

Award-winning project transforming lives in Rwanda

Water changes lives, and the Ntarabana Water Supply System Project is a testament to this transformative power. Launched in mid-2023 and completed by the end of 2024, this landmark initiative by Water for All Belgium, in partnership with local communities and organizations, addresses critical water access issues in the Ntarabana, Masoro, and Jabana sectors of Rulindo district, Rwanda. The project provides direct and permanent access to clean water for thousands of people, including students in nine schools, patients in two health centres, and visitors to two markets.

Executed with the trusted local partner Water Supply and Environment Protection Association (WEPA), the Ntarabana Water Supply System aims to establish a reliable water supply system, improve hygiene and sanitation practices, promote environmental protection, and provide indirect benefits to neighbouring populations by reducing the strain on their water supply.

Innovative and sustainable approach

Community participation through Rwanda’s traditional Umuganda (community works) system is a cornerstone of the project. This method enhances project ownership and reduces implementation costs, ensuring the active involvement of local people. Their engagement fosters a sense of ownership and equips them with the skills to maintain the system effectively, ensuring a sustainable, time-proof solution.

Impact and Future Opportunities

The Ntarabana Water Supply System has profoundly impacted daily life in the region. It provides direct access to clean drinking water, enhances public health by reducing waterborne diseases, improves the quality of education and healthcare due to better hygiene facilities, and strengthens community resilience. The project stands as a transformative milestone in tackling urgent water access challenges.
