“Always be yourself and you’ll be surprised how far you can go”

Mariana Paredes graduated with a marketing degree in 2023 and has already been able to widen her scope. These days, she splits her time between communication and HR. “One day I'm taking pictures. One day I'm doing recruiting, so it's a little bit of everything. That's why I love my job,” she says.

On the HR side, Mariana supports recruitment, new hire orientation and onboarding. She also handles local communication, for example through branding, planning events and using the intranet to keep employees informed.

“My main goal is to ensure that new employees and current employees are getting the information they need and feel welcome and stay engaged,” Mariana explains.

Adding more strings to her bow

Before joining the Group, Mariana had just graduated from college with a marketing degree – and was eager to add more strings to her bow. Then she noticed the ad for our HR internship.

“I thought it would be a good opportunity, because it's a huge company. If I get in there’s a lot of opportunities to grow, right?” says Mariana.

“Now I'm in love with HR. And the fact that I can do HR and also the communication part is a win.”

When asked how the Group has lived up to her expectations, Mariana says they have been exceeded.

“I’ve been given important projects and the chance to make a real difference, which I find highly rewarding. Ever since I was an intern, I feel that I've been supported all the way and encouraged to keep learning and growing. I know that my ideas and my contributions are valued,” Mariana says.

The fact that I’ve been given this independence and support shows that the company trusts its employees and expects us to take responsibility for our actions and projects.

A stand-out rebrand

One of Mariana’s projects that stands out to her is the rebrand of the Rock Hill facility in South Carolina. Previously it had been Atlas Copco-branded, but now she has transitioned it to Atlas Copco Group branding.

“I was able to implement my creativity and attention to detail to make sure everything looked nice and followed the guidelines,” Mariana says.

On the HR side, Mariana suggested that the local onboarding service emails could be automated, to eliminate sending them as a repetitive manual task. Her manager took the idea onboard and Mariana led the project to completion, supported by business process engineers.

“I'm really proud that I was able to be creative and partner with other colleagues for this project,” she says.

To ensure a smooth, user-friendly automation, Mariana put the solution to the test together with the engineers based on different scenarios.

“What if the employee is on leave or something like that? Then we need to change the status from "incomplete”, to stop reminder emails. And we need to make sure that we add a status where we can put in a comment and get back to that employee whenever they're back. As an engineer you might not think about those different scenarios.”

  • Current position: HR/Communication Specialist
  • An opportunity seized: Suggesting to automate the local onboarding service, then taking the project from start to finish. Now we avoid manually sending identical e-mails and can get complete reports.
  • Upskilling in the last year: Skills in recruitment and employee relationships, developed through shadowing, mentorship as well as trainings on learning platforms offered by the Group.

Mariana

The employee experience

When speaking with Mariana, it becomes clear that she cares deeply about the employee experience. In fact, supporting colleagues is one of the things she likes best about her job.

“I love being there for our employees to make sure that they have a good experience, that they feel welcome and are in a good place to work – because we're here 8 hours a day,” Mariana says.

“The supportive culture and teamwork makes me feel like work is rewarding. It feels good to make sure that we have that kind of culture.”

Mariana’s advice

When asked what advice she would give other early professionals, Mariana encourages them to dare to go for what they want.

“Don't be afraid to take the first step. Especially being fresh out of college, you’re just looking to gain experience, right? You want a company to hear you, to listen to you, and you want to show them your skills and all the knowledge that you gained in college,” Mariana says.

“So always be yourself and you’ll be surprised how far you can go.”
