“Stay calm and show what you know”

When Carla Lozano joined us as SHEQ Manager about a year before this interview, she found a workplace culture that she has loved being a part of. With her sights set on an international future within the Group, Carla is building a career grounded in purpose and collaboration.

From the beginning, Carla explains that she was drawn to the Group as it is a recognized company in Peru. Her interest was also peaked by our group target of increasing the share of women in leadership positions to 25% by 2030.

“This is very important for me. Because I know that I will have opportunities for professional growth,” Carla says.

A culture that feels like home

Carla’s journey with Atlas Copco Group began with a positive interview experience.

“I was very comfortable with the interview process, because I knew that I had the experience to do the job, and also that my experience could contribute to the Atlas Copco Group culture,” Carla says.

The feeling was mutual, and so Carla joined us as SHEQ Manager about a year before this interview. So far, things are going well for her.

“Working here has been a challenging and rewarding experience,” Carla says.

I’ve loved being able to contribute to a culture where safety, health, environment and quality really matter.

From day one, Carla has felt welcomed and supported by the people around her. In fact, her colleagues are what she likes most about working here.

"People from my own SHEQ team and from all areas – like logistics, human resources and operations – have always been happy to help and support me,” she says.

“There's a strong sense of collaboration. People are happy to share their knowledge.”

A proactive mindset

SHEQ stands for safety, health, environment and quality. These are Carla’s areas of focus. Her work involves everything from finding opportunities for safety improvements on the factory floor to working with suppliers to lower emissions in our own operations. Carla highlights how important proactivity is to succeed in her role.

“I think that it’s important, especially when it comes to safety, to always stay ahead of problems and evaluate different solutions to face them head on,” Carla says, and shares an example of how the SHEQ team might do safety walks with operators in a factory to anticipate problems before they escalate, and collaborate to find solutions.

In fact, collaboration is another key part of Carla’s work. She shares how she approaches building positive relationships with all sorts of people in a huge organization such as ours.

“I'll explain my point of view or why something matters – but it’s equally important to listen to the other person. That way we can find common ground."

  • Current position: SHEQ Manager
  • Upskilling in the last year. Solidifying knowledge on sustainability topics, for example environment and social.
  • Approach to collaboration: Making my perspective and reasoning clear, as well as listening – all to find common ground.

Quick facts about
Carla

Learning and evolving

One of the most rewarding aspects of Carla’s first year has been the opportunity to expand her knowledge.

“I went into this role with knowledge, but I feel that my knowledge has solidified in my time here,” she says.

Relatedly, Carla brings up something everyone might not know about the Group – the platform Learning Link. This is our Group-wide learning management system. It features trainings produced by Atlas Copco Group, as well as the LinkedIn Learning library with thousands of courses.

“There are trainings on topics relevant to what I do. For example on sustainability, social and environment. It's been very good,” Carla says.

By no means does Carla feel like she is done growing. On the contrary, she is excited to keep learning and building a future within the Group.

“I want to continue growing professionally and eventually take on a role abroad. I’d love to develop my career internationally – but within Atlas Copco Group.”

Advice for others

For new colleagues, Carla offers reassuring advice on how to approach their first few months in the Group.

“People here will support you and help you with all your doubts or questions. So don't worry,” she says.

And for those preparing for their first interview?

“In general, not only for Atlas Copco Group, I would say the most important thing is to stay calm and show what you know. Show that experience that you have, demonstrate your knowledge and be confident,” Carla says.
