New colleague through acquisition – China – BoZhong

“Keep an open mind and express your ideas”

As one of the founders and in charge of factory operations, Lawrence Qiu got his hands full after BoZhong (Shandong) Industrial Equipment Co. was acquired by Atlas Copco Group in 2023. He shares the story of how he handled his own hesitations and challenges during the transition – as well as those of his team.

Lawrence describes the transition to joining the Group as a “truly unique experience.” He explains that before the acquisition, BoZhong was a small company, agile but with limited resources. After becoming part of the Group, they have gained access to more resources and a broader platform for development. Becoming part of a large global company has also given BoZhong employees access to more rigorous decision-making processes.

“It's like an immersive learning experience, allowing us to deeply understand how excellent companies operate,” Lawrence says.

“Although we've encountered many challenges along the way, such as cultural differences and adjustments in working styles, I've also gained a great sense of achievement. It's been a very valuable experience.”

High compatibility

When two company cultures merge after an acquisition, it can be challenging. However, Lawrence feels that this transition was in a good place to succeed from the beginning.

“Before the acquisition, the Group had an initial evaluation of us, and we found that the two companies were very compatible in many aspects,” Lawrence says.

“This compatibility has allowed us to achieve a high degree of consistency in our work, whether in dealing with customers or handling orders. This has made the integration process almost seamless, giving us a strong sense of belonging, as if everyone had been on the same starting line and working towards the same goal from the beginning.”

Support during the transition

When asked in 2025 about how the transition has been, Lawrence is positive – highlighting how Group has provided new colleagues from BoZhong consideration and support.

“Colleagues from the Group were very patient, offering us a lot of positive encouragement and being inclusive of our small errors. They've actively helped us adapt to the new company culture. This support has made us feel very warm and helped us integrate more quickly,” he says.

As a manager, Lawrence played a vital role of supporting his team as well. For example through communication meetings to address employees' doubts and help them adapt to the new environment and in taking on new roles.

After the acquisition, I sometimes felt a bit confused when facing new things as well. When I noticed that the teams were showing signs of fear and difficulty, I would share some of the operational challenges we faced in the old company and whether there might be better solutions to these problems in the new company.

Finding better ways

Regarding what he likes best about working for the Group, Lawrence brings up the decision-making process and teamwork. Seeking constant improvement is deeply embedded in the Group, for example through a certain cultural belief that is often repeated – something Lawrence clearly has experienced as well.

“Our belief in "there is always a better way" is almost an obsession,” Lawrence says with a laugh.

“When facing challenges, we always sit together with our experts from various fields for some hot discussions to explore the best solutions and look for opportunities for improvement. The process might be tough, but in the end, we always achieve something greater by believing in “a better way”.”

  • Current position: Manufacturing Manager
  • How to find better ways: Sitting down with experts, explore through discussion to find opportunities and solutions - a sometimes tough process that always pays off.
  • Learnings since the acquisition: New knowledge in production and safety management, team building and ways of improving processes. The transition has also highlighted the importance of staying focused on a common goal.

Advice from Lawrence

Learning is an important aspect of finding better ways, and Lawrence says that he learned a lot about corporate integration and teamwork from the acquisition.

“Through cooperation with the Group's experts and colleagues, I gained more knowledge about production management, safety management, and team building. Additionally, I learned about our methods of doing things. If we change the way we communicate, some processes can go more smoothly. Although everyone's focus is different, the ultimate goal is the same. It's not worth wasting time due to differences in understanding, concerns, and considerations of one's own interests,” he says.

When asked what advice he would give to someone working at a company that has just been acquired, he suggests a proactive approach while remaining open-minded.

“I would advise everyone to keep an open mind and actively express their ideas. Don't be afraid of making mistakes, because our culture is quite inclusive and will help you quickly find solutions to problems. At the same time, actively learn, quickly adapt to new roles, and integrate,” he says.
