This role will be specifically involved within the Innovation Centre, Exhaust Management Systems business as part of Edwards Vacuum. This business is the world's leading supplier of technology to abate toxic and global warming gases produced during the manufacture of semiconductor/ microelectronic devices. It exists within Edwards’ North America Customer Centre to enable decisions to be made both locally and rapidly.
This role will be a part of a growing team that is focused on gathering real world data to focus on science-based targets and working in partnership with our customers to keep up with the ever-increasing environmental emissions standards. This will not only require frequent interactions and teamwork with Edwards Engineering, the Environmental solutions group and Facilities + vendors. Along with cross functional departments like Applications and Technical Support. The role’s primary responsibilities will be focused around facilitating the analytical testing of Edwards Technology, at Edwards facilities. This person will be the primary responsible for the chemistry and gas Laboratory as laboratory manager responsible for lab facilities and inventory as well as test setup and oversite of lab operations and maintenance of lab safety.
What We Expect of You?
A Chemistry and Gas Lab Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing operations and ensuring the laboratory's safety, efficiency, and effectiveness. Their main responsibilities typically include:
- Work with the Innovation Center Manager and senior team members to plan test activities and laboratory utilisation to ensure efficient use of resources and timely completion of agreed projects.
- Identify, implement and continuously improve relevant processes and procedures to ensure legislative and standards compliance, ensuring all documentation and records are correct, up-to-date and available for audits and inspection.
- Propose, define and provide project/change management for the maintenance and improvement of the site bulk and speciality (hazardous) gas storage and distribution network.
- Manage the acquisition and renewal of laboratory capital assets to support the affordable management of purchases against the cost-centre budget.

- Laboratory Operations Management:
- Oversee the daily operations of the chemistry and gas laboratory.
- Ensure that all laboratory equipment is functioning properly and is regularly maintained.
- Manage the scheduling and coordination of laboratory activities.
- Coordinate with Vendors for management of laboratory facilities like drain, power, water, CDA, N2, etc.
- Implement and maintain 6S activities/audits in lab areas
- Safety and Compliance:
- Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding hazardous materials and chemicals.
- Work closely with site SHE and Facilities teams, provide specialist knowledge (SME) for hazardous material handling and safety
- Represent lab on local safety committee
- Maintain and monitor the gas detection and other safety systems, maintain calibration records and ensure operation of safety critical systems.
- Staff Supervision and Training:
- Supervise laboratory users and be present as a ‘safety second’ during operations.
- Provide training and support to staff on laboratory techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures.
- Quality Control and Assurance:
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory processes.
- Ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results and experiments.
- Implement quality control measures and conduct regular audits.
- Inventory and Supply Management:
- Manage the procurement and inventory of chemicals, reagents, and laboratory supplies.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals and gases.
- Monitor and manage laboratory budgets related to supplies and equipment.
- Project and Research Oversight:
- Oversee and coordinate research projects and experiments conducted in the lab.
- Ensure that research is conducted in accordance with established protocols and ethical guidelines.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of experiments, procedures, and results.
- Document and report any incidents or safety violations.
- Ensure proper documentation for compliance and auditing purposes.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Liaise with other departments, research teams, and external stakeholders.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration between laboratory personnel and other entities.
- Provide expert advice and support on chemistry and gas-related matters.
Overall, a Chemistry and Gas Lab Manager is responsible for ensuring the laboratory runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently while supporting the research and operational needs of the Innovation Center team.
Education/ Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in scientific discipline and 2 years of laboratory experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling 5 years.
Relevant Previous experience
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant supervisory / laboratory management experience.
- Previous laboratory experience in the chemistry/ gas laboratory, machinery or semiconductor industry.
Knowledge areas/Skills
- Knowledge of business and management principles, safety requirements and lab equipment and software.
- Strong technical trouble shooting skills; being able to relate a process issue to a physical engineered solution
- Experience and comfort with use of typical hand tools
- Basic computer and Microsoft suite skills and experience (computer literacy)
- Analytical testing equipment experience preferred but not required
- Have a customer centric mindset and foster an environment of customer satisfaction
