Atlas Copco on-site presence makes the difference for Chiles largest copper producer

June 19, 2015

Atlas Copco Rental in Chile is currently supplying air compressors and a range of other equipment to the Codelco Norte division of the state-run mining company Codelco.

An Atlas Copco maintenance team based at the division’s Chuquicamata site ensures shortest possible response times when maintenance or technical assistance are required. This reduces the risk of costly downtime for Codelco and adds value that many other suppliers are unable to match. Codelco is the world’s largest producer of copper and, by excavated volume, the Chuquicamata operation is the biggest open pit copper mine in the world. It is located 1,650 km north of Santiago, near Calama, and Atlas Copco Rental has a wide range of equipment on-site supported by a 20-person maintenance team.

Broad scope of supply
Equipment covered by the rental contract includes lighting towers, diesel compressors for the tire shop and for mounting on trucks as mobile maintenance workshops, welding equipment, portable generators for electricity, electric compressors, and a hoisting platform for maintenance tasks. Although the rental contract expired in April 2013 it has been extended and negotiations are in progress regarding renewal for a further three years.
An example for other mining companies
Valeria Corral, Business Manager, Atlas Copco Rental, Chile, explains that a contract extension will give Atlas Copco Rental the possibility of expanding into new areas at Codelco.

This contract is an excellent example of what we can do for mining companies. Codelco has the highest safety standards and we have shown that we can comply with all their requirements. Atlas Copco is the only Codelco supplier which has ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18000.
