Smart automation takes service to the next level

Top-notch service in logistics starts with efficient storage and flawless delivery of the right parts at the right time to the right place. That's no easy task, especially with an ever-growing product portfolio.

To deliver on that promise, Atlas Copco Airpower's Service Center in Wilrijk invested in an automated warehouse based on the “goods-to-man” principle. Under this principle, order pickers receive the necessary parts directly at their workstation, without having to move around the warehouse.

How does the automated warehouse work?

In this automated warehouse, parts are stored in bins stacked up to six meters high. Smart robots move on top of these stacks, select the right bin, and bring it to ergonomically improved picking stations. There, human operators take over to check quality and arrange shipping.

Cooperation and flexibility as the key to success

This is a wonderful example of how we embrace new technologies together with our partners to continuously improve our service and operations,” says Hans Thibau, VP Logistics Compressor Technique and General Manager of the Atlas Copco Airpower Service Center in Wilrijk. “I am extremely proud of the dedicated team that realized this project, demonstrating great flexibility and continuous delivery to our customers throughout the entire project.

Efficiency, space savings, and improved ergonomics

The automated warehouse is highly efficient: it occupies only 25% of the warehouse space but handles up to 70% of incoming orders. Each route is carefully planned for optimal flow, and the robots work together to increase speed.

Automation not only increases order accuracy, but also significantly improves ergonomics and safety for employees. They no longer have to roll heavy equipment back and forth. The compact stacking structure frees up extra space for other applications.

This important step confirms our global position as a leading service organization for compressed air,” says Dirk Beyts, President of the Compressor Technique Service Division. “It will support our further growth, increase delivery quality, and continue to improve efficiency—now and in the future.
