Meet our colleagues

Thomas

I started my career at Atlas Copco Group 11 years ago. Fresh out of school, I began as a support engineer for IT engineering applications. From there, I grew into the role of project engineer for production applications, then project manager for sales & marketing, and later for aftermarket applications. My current role is Product Owner for Product Information Management.

Testimonials IT EN Thomas

What does your job exactly involve?
It means that within the Compressor Technique business area, I’m responsible for the product information-related applications. I gather the business requirements for these applications and use them to define the direction and priorities for this domain. Together with the team, we aim to implement this in the best possible way, following an agile approach.

What do you enjoy about your current job?
The variety in the tasks—no two days are the same. I also appreciate the freedom to shape the role and the collaborative team environment.
Since I interact with many people, I gain a broad understanding of how the company operates and what’s happening across different departments.
Bringing all of that together into a common approach that everyone can align with is a great challenge, and it keeps the job both fun and interesting.

What degree do you have?
Master’s in Electronics/IT (Industrial Engineering in Electronics/IT)

How did you end up at Atlas Copco Group, and why did you choose us?
Atlas Copco Airpower is a well-known name in the region. I first came into contact with the company through job fairs and direct invitations for students at my university at the time.
To be honest, I initially accepted an invitation more as a test and preparation for future job interviews than with the actual intention of starting at Atlas Copco Group. As an IT graduate, I didn’t think the company would offer many opportunities in my field. However, I was completely wrong. I was so impressed by the company, its culture, and its professional approach that I didn’t hesitate for a moment. Now, 11 years later, my expectations have been more than fulfilled.

How do you find working at Atlas Copco Group? What do you value?
Working at Atlas Copco Group means working for a company you can truly be proud of, in my opinion. The values that Atlas Copco Group upholds—both internally and externally—make me proud to be part of such an organization.
What I personally find very valuable is that Atlas Copco Group supports its employees in as many ways as possible.

Personal training, flexible hours, freedom, responsibility... all things that are very valuable to me and that are all part of my current role.

Which project or mission are you most proud of, and why?
From an IT perspective, the main mission is to support the operational business and create added value. A few years ago, we developed a custom-built system for the marketing department that automatically generates technical datasheets based on engineering data.
Considering that Atlas Copco Group has hundreds of thousands of product types (and that number keeps growing daily), you can imagine the scale of this task. The efficiency and added value this system provided—and still provides—are enormous. That, combined with the system’s complexity, makes it the project I’m most proud of.

How would you describe the working atmosphere?
Relaxed and open. There’s a strong culture of supporting and helping each other. Personally, I’ve made several good friendships at Atlas Copco Group—people I no longer work with directly, but still meet up with after work. Atlas Copco Group provides an environment where that’s possible. The “chalet,” the sports field with a café at Atlas Copco Airpower, definitely contributes to that as well.

How is your work-life balance?
That’s mostly in your own hands. Atlas Copco Group is a company that actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. Since the COVID period and the rise of remote work, many people have found it challenging to maintain that balance. It’s important to set your own boundaries—something that’s even being encouraged as a personal development goal for many employees.

Do you think training is important, and do you receive training at Atlas Copco Group?
Absolutely. Training always proves useful sooner or later. It can open new doors or spark new interests that you didn’t have before. Atlas Copco Group supports this and offers every employee the opportunity to follow training—both through internal programs and external courses you can propose yourself.

How do you see growth opportunities within Atlas Copco Group?
There are countless growth opportunities at Atlas Copco Group. Personally, I’ve grown from a support role to a product owner role, now responsible for a team. But there are many paths within the company.
Our site in Wilrijk is the headquarters for the Compressor Technique and Power Technique Business Areas. There are many departments here—engineering, marketing, IT, production, logistics, and more. You can grow within a department or switch to another one. And since Atlas Copco Group operates globally, there are also opportunities to work abroad.

What would you still like to do in the future?
Mainly enjoy life. The COVID period had an impact on everyone, and with two little kids aged 3 and 4, it’s time to enjoy life again and get out more. At work, I want to make a success of the project I’ve been working on for the past year.

Finally, would you recommend working at Atlas Copco Group to others?
Absolutely—everyone is more than welcome. If everything I’ve said so far isn’t reason enough, I’d say: come and see for yourself. There’s a wide variety of jobs, and you really have to experience what Atlas Copco Group is like as a company. It convinced me back then, and I’m certainly not the only one. The Atlas Copco Group family still has room to grow!
