New mining records jointly set by Yunnan Tin Group and Atlas Copco

Yunnan Tin Company Group Ltd (YT), China, is world’s largest production and manufacturing base for metal tin, tin profiles, tin chemicals and arsenic chemicals.

It is also the biggest precious metals research and development center in China. In December 2012, a monthly digging of 464.3 meters was completed at YT’s Song Mine, creating the new record throughout the whole group. This record was achieved with the support of Atlas Copco’s compressed air solutions, specially designed according to the characteristics of Song Mine’s actual work.

The cooperation with Atlas Copco started in 2004, when Yunnan Tin planned to replace old compressor equipment that failed to meet their capacity requirements.

Over the recent ten years, Atlas Copco compressors have won recognition and trust from YT with their high performance, stability and service. In 2007, YT selected 54 excellent suppliers out of more than a thousand candidates and Atlas Copco was among the “top ten material suppliers”. At present, there are more than 100 Atlas Copco compressors operating in YT, counting for 90% of all YT’s compressors.

High performance requirement for air compressors

The Song Mine is Yunnan Tin’s largest mining base today and is using only Atlas Copco compressors to provide power for its tin ore mining. In total, there are 29 units installed: GA500, GA250, GA110 and GA55 oil-injected screw compressors, as well as an ES130 Internet remote monitoring and central control system.

It not only requires air compressors to run at full load for a long period of time, but also requests air compressors to endure the demanding tests of the underground wet environment, high temperatures and dust. Atlas Copco air compressor equipment has displayed excellent performance and super high stability since it was put into use, which is the key to our choice of Atlas Copco.”

Efficient, reliable, built to last

The GA compressors are designed to provide high-quality compressed air even under harsh conditions. Every GA complies with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 1217, engineered for reliable service, even in ambient temperatures up to 55°C/131°F and very harsh environmental circumstances. At the same time, they established a new standard of environmental protection and energy efficiency. The newly designed screw rotors reduce the energy demand by 5%-6%, which contributes to environmental protection while saving energy cost.

Optimized compressor utilization

The ES optimization system is designed for users running a series of compressors. By allocating the operation of each compressor in accordance with total consumption of compressed air, the system can largely reduce the time of idle operation without load. At the same time, accurate control of pressure can help lower pressure on piping network to save as much as 30% of energy. The remote monitoring system can even transmit all operation parameters and information to the customer’s monitoring terminal through the communication module.

A new record throughout the group

Besides this, Atlas Copco arranged permanent service engineers for the purposes of timely handling, repair, debugging and maintenance with the target to safeguard our production schedule and free us from any worry.” Mr. Guang Gu continued.”

Tailor made solutions for mining applications

By starting to provide solutions to YT, Atlas Copco designed GA compressors with an input voltage level of 6KV and a pressure of 7 bar according to the characteristics of the air demand in the mining industry. Considering different environments at the ground level and underground, compressors at the ground level are mainly large-scale GA500/250 compressors while underground compressors are mainly small GA110 air-cooling oil-injected screw compressors with short gas transmission pipelines due to space limitation. Air filters effectively protect the core components of air compressors from high dust environments. Since YT is located in a highland area with an atmospheric pressure lower than normal, Atlas Copco designed the compressors with proper motor power to avoid air inadequacy caused by reduced motor performance due to the low atmospheric pressure.

Besides compressors, Yunnan Tin recently started purchasing mining equipment such as Boomers, Boltec tunnel and drift rigs, Scooptrams, Diamec underground core drilling rigs and other equipment from Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation Technique.
