Breaking new grounds

Pelin Kocak

“I didn’t have any particular profession in mind as a child, but I had a collection of rocks when I was of pre-school age, and always admired nature and earth. I grew up in a city surrounded by beautiful mountains. No one was surprised by the profession I chose. ”

Pelin Kocak
Sales Engineer,
Turkey

Pelin Kocak is groundbreaking in more ways than one. She is a sales engineer and one of few women working in the mining industry in Turkey. She has also participated as a speaker in the professional women’s network as “a woman with a groundbreaking job”.

Pelin has a Bachelor’s degree from Istanbul Technical University and is currently taking a Master of Science in mining engineering. During her Bachelor’s studies she completed two internship programs. One in the open pit gold mine Eldorado Gold in Usak, Turkey, and one in an underground coal mine in Manisa, Turkey.

Pelin started out as a sales support responsible at Atlas Copco and has for the last three years been working as a sales engineer in Ankara and Istanbul.

“I have worked for every division within the Mining and Rock Excavation business area in different positions. I really like it and it is challenging. It entails full support for customers’ needs”.

Being an inspiration

Pelin Kocak

As one of only a few women engineers in the mining and construction business in Turkey, she is leading the way for other women.

“I belive in breaking new grounds. It is the most wonderful part of my career. I participated in the professional women’s network event as a speaker in June 2016, on the topic “women with groundbreaking jobs”. It was great to share my experiences and I hope I can inspire many other professional women to realize that women can do anything in spite of what we were told”.

What have been the challenges in your career?
“When I got my degree I wanted to start working directly on a mining site. Unfortunately, it is not easy for a woman to do this in Turkey. There are even legal restrictions for women in underground operations. Atlas Copco was a great alternative to working on site. I knew that the company is firm, and the best in the market. The vision and the policy matched my own way of living. It was a perfect fit from the first day”.

What makes a good engineer?
“Cool brain, warm heart and clean hands. These qualities surely will build trust with the customers and the colleagues, and trust will always lead to a better way”.
